When Was the Last Time You Spoke to Your MSP?

When was the last time you actually sat down with your MSP?
It shouldn’t take an email outage, a crashed server, a new project kick-off, or a contract renewal just to hear from your MSP. Instead, when was the last time your provider talked with you about your technology, your business, and how the two could work better together? If you have to think about it, that’s a problem.
Your MSP Should Be More Than a Help Desk
For many companies, interactions with an MSP are limited to reactive troubleshooting. Whether it’s fixing broken equipment, ordering a new laptop, or granting application access, everything is handled through isolated support requests.
That service is important. Keeping your technology running is the baseline of what an MSP should do. But a great partner doesn’t just wait for something to break. Instead, they look for ways to make your business more productive, secure, and efficient.
Technology Reviews Should Be Proactive
A technology review should be a regular conversation between your business and your IT provider. At Summit, we believe those conversations should happen at least semi-annually. The goal isn’t to sell you another piece of technology, it’s to step back from the day-to-day tickets and look at the bigger picture.
What Is Working?
Do your employees have the tools they need to do their jobs efficiently?
Will the systems your company relies on perform the way they should?
Have recurring issues kept coming back?
What Isn’t Working?
Do security vulnerabilities need to be addressed?
Could aging computers or infrastructure be creating unnecessary problems?
Might employees be wasting time working around technology instead of using it?
Do certain systems create more headaches than value?
What Could Be Better?
This is where a good technology review can really provide value. Your MSP should be bringing ideas to the table.
- Can adopting AI allow you to automate a repetitive process?
- Are you paying for software nobody is using?
- Do you have an aging system that needs replacing?
- Would implementing a cloud solution help eliminate infrastructure costs and save you money?
- Are there security improvements that should be made before they become a problem?
- Does remaining eligible for certain contracts require you to meet specific security standards?
You shouldn’t have to know what technology is available or what questions to ask. That’s what you’re paying your MSP to do.
Your MSP Should Find Problems You Didn’t Know You Had
This is where reactive IT providers and strategic MSPs truly part ways. A reactive provider waits for you to flag an issue, whereas a proactive partner spots trouble before it ever hits your radar.
That could mean catching a failing hard drive before it stalls an employee, spotting security risks in your configurations, or discovering that backups aren’t actually running properly. It can also mean identifying recurring productivity bottlenecks, spotting unused software licenses you’re still paying for, or noticing that your current setup won’t support your next phase of growth.
That’s the value of having an MSP. You shouldn’t have to become an IT expert just to know whether your provider is doing a good job.
Technology Should Support the Business
Your technology is not simply the cost of doing business. Your technology stack exists to support your business. It should:
- Help your employees work faster
- Protect your data
- Make collaboration easier
- Reduce unnecessary costs
And most importantly, it should be capable of supporting where your company is going. That’s why your MSP should understand more than your network. They should understand your business.
- Where are you growing?
- Where are employees struggling?
- What processes are inefficient?
- What are your biggest technology expenses?
- What risks keep you up at night?
- What are your plans for the next 12–24 months?
- Those answers should influence your technology strategy.
So, When Was Your Last Technology Review?
If the answer is, “I don’t remember,” it’s probably time to have one. And if the only time you hear from your MSP is when something breaks or when it’s time to renew your contract, you may be getting a help desk when what your business really needs is a technology partner.
A good MSP should be checking in regularly, finding problems before they become emergencies, identifying opportunities to save money, and bringing ideas that help your business operate better. Your IT provider shouldn’t just be keeping the lights on, they should be helping you decide where those lights need to go next.
