Staying Cyber-Safe While Traveling: Essential Tips for Digital Security on the Go

Traveling expands your horizons and offers new experiences but also brings new cybersecurity risks. Whether you’re traveling for work or leisure, staying alert about your digital security is vital. At Summit, we’re committed to protecting our clients and their businesses from cyber threats. To assist our clients while they’re on the go, we’ve put together some essential tips for staying cyber-safe while traveling.

Before You Depart: Pre-Trip Preparations

  • Create a Backup: Before you set off, back up your data to a physical device or the cloud. (If you are an Apple user, make sure you have a current iCloud back up.) This ensures that you have a copy of your important information in case of theft or loss.
  • Update Your Software: Make sure all your devices are running the latest software versions. Security patches are often included in updates to protect against new threats. Download and apply these while still on the WIFI at home.
  • Disable Auto-Connect Features: Turn off any settings that allow your devices to automatically connect to Wi-Fi or Bluetooth networks. This prevents unwanted connections to insecure or malicious networks.

On the Road: Staying Secure in Transit

  • Physical Security: Always keep your devices with you or secured in a safe place. Never leave them unattended in public areas, such as airports or cafes, and when available, keep your laptop in the room safe and or at minimum out of sight.
  • Strong Passwords: Use complex passwords and consider enabling multi-factor authentication (MFA) for an added layer of security and a password manager to maintain your complex passwords.
  • Be Cautious with Public Wi-Fi: When traveling or even around town, try to avoid public Wi-Fi. If you must use it, ask an employee to confirm the name of the guest Wi-Fi. Avoid conducting sensitive transactions like banking or shopping when using public Wi-Fi.

Social Media Savvy: Share with Care

  • Location Sharing: Think twice before you update your social media with your location. Cybercriminals can use this information to target you and those around you.  Criminals closer to home will know that your home has been left unattended and is available to be broken into.
  • Privacy Settings: Review and adjust your social media privacy settings to control who can see your posts and personal information.

Returning Home: Post-Travel Practices

  • Check Your Accounts: Upon returning, monitor your bank statements and accounts for any unusual activity.
  • Run Security Scans: Perform a full security scan on your devices to ensure no malware or viruses were picked up during your travels.

By following these tips, you can enjoy your travels without compromising your digital safety. Remember, staying cyber-safe is a continuous process that doesn’t end when your trip does. Keep your guard up and your data secure, no matter where you are in the world.
